Director's Bio

Director of Outrigger Canoe Paddling Operations, Kalama Heine
Coach Heine is a graduate of Kamehameha Schools Kapalama Campus where he was an ILH Varsity I Canoe Paddling Champion and has a degree from Chaminade University in Computer Science.

Coach Heine has over 30 years of paddling experience and 20+ years of coaching experience. He has been the head coach at his alma mater since 1990 and has coached the Varsity & JV programs to numerous ILH titles. Since Canoe

Paddling became a recognized high school championship sport in 2002, he has guided the boy’s programs to the state title in 2005 & 2006 and 1 mixed title in 2007.

Curriculum

Mission

Outrigger Canoe Paddling is the designated state sport and is also recognized as an official high school
championship sport.

The program will:

•    Promote the tradition of the sport and enhance the participant’s cultural understanding.
•    Focus on the ideals of teamwork and sportsmanship.
•    Teach the technical aspects of the sport.
•    Encourage participants to develop their physical skills and develop good sportsmanship by respecting other people’s abilities and talents through healthy competition and teamwork.

Goals and Objectives

Overall Goal:  The program will be the premier clinic for youth paddling in the state.

Goal 1:   The program will provide the participants with cultural knowledge.
Objective:  Coaches will teach the participants the cultural aspects of the sport.

Goal 2:   Provide the participants with technical knowledge and skills.
Objective:  Coaches will teach and demonstrate basic techniques, including paddling, steering and rigging of the canoe.  Participants will be provided with the opportunities for hands-on experience.

Goal 3:  Participants will be provided with high quality instruction, terminology and rules of the sport.

Objective: Coaches are seasoned experts in the sport with coaching and competitive experience.
